A unique presence in the sonic spectrum Kotchy released his debut artist album ’89’ on Civil Music in 2009 after a series of EPs. Ahead of it’s time it touched on so many different styles that itʼs understandable why he drew comparisons to musical geniuses Prince, Pharrell and Beck. Not that he had necessarily reached their heady heights, but like them heʼs not scared to break the boundaries of what pop music can be. Mixmag called it “Timberlake-style soul pop” while the NME said “Meet the angst-ridden anti-Pharrell. Heʼs been making like Prince with a hard-on for the static-swathed glitch-pop that Flying Lotus made cool in ʼ08.” A true multi instrumentalist Kotchy’s plays nearly everything you hear on ʻ89ʼ and distinctive hushed-style vocals feature throughout. Cleverly constructed it take more than a couple of listens to notice everything thatʼs brilliant about Kotchy’s music as he ventures off in one direction and returns from another. As a drummer and producer, Kotchy has worked with some of the finest names in his hometown, New York. Both on the hip-hop underground and playing in revered NY bands The Epochs, White Tiger and as in Violet (a short lived semi supergroup with with members of Fischerspooner, Rufus Wainright, Joan As Police Woman and Polyphonic Spree) Also look for his collaborations with Yo Majestyʼs Shunda K, Starkey and XXXchange plus his remixes for Empire of The Sun, Tricky and Fischerspooner.
